Low Level Laser Therapy for Androgenic Alopecia

One of the most common questions we get at Kolstad Hair Restoration is about laser hair rejuvenation. Sometimes it sounds too good to be true. Can simple light therapy regrow hair? The short answer is that it’s complicated.  Specific wavelengths of light have been found to increase cell activity and ATP production. The more blood flow to certain tissues in the body, the better those tissues do. Low-level laser therapy is an FDA approved treatment for androgenic alopecia.

Excimer, helium-neon, and fractional erbium-glass lasers have been used to treat hair loss. There are many ways of delivering light therapy, but to be effective, the lasers need to penetrate the surface. Hair follicles are located in the subcuticular layers of the scalp and need to be stimulated directly by laser light. Common types of devices claiming low-level laser therapy are available as:

  • in-salon hoods
  • bonnet or head caps
  • hand-held devices.

Laser light rejuvenates dying follicles by increasing blood flow and cellular metabolism. With increased oxygenation and nutrition weakened follicles can become reinvigorated. Small hairs can thicken and dying follicles can be saved. However, after the hair follicle has died only hair transplant can grow hair in areas of baldness.

The use of low-level laser therapy has been shown to increase scalp coverage without the use of hair transplant or medications. To maximize the benefits of laser therapy many hair transplant experts will combine treatment using minoxidil shampoos or topical creams. Microneedling and PRP are supplemental treatments that can enhance laser hair restoration.

One of the primary limitations of laser hair restoration is that repeat treatments are required for optimal results.  Receiving once-a-week treatments for up to six months can be burdensome. At home low level laser light machines are available for purchase through the internet but these devices are not regulated and the consumer does not always know what they are getting.

  • No adverse effects have been reported. The primary risk is to the wallet and lack of results.
  • It is clean and painless.
  • Some low level laser therapy devices are portable.
